In 1946 the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) was the first conservation authority formed in Ontario and, since then, has continued to be a respected leader in watershed management.

We are seeking an individual to fill the position of Water and Planning Technician. This is a full-time position within the Water and Planning department of the ABCA. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual either beginning or wishing to advance their career within a leading conservation-minded organization in Southwestern Ontario.
The ABCA has a positive team working environment and provides opportunities to assist other departments in a wide range of projects. The successful candidate will enjoy working at the ABCA’s administrative centre office in Exeter located at the Morrison Dam Conservation Area and connected with the South Huron Trail system. Exeter is within broader Huron County (often referred to as Ontario’s West Coast) due to close proximity to the beautiful shores of Lake Huron.
Major Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
- Assist the delivery of the ABCA’s municipal plan input program and for the delivery of its regulatory permitting responsibilities (Ontario Regulation 41/24) program.
- Provide professional advice, legislative and regulatory guidance, and to recommend appropriate action to ABCA staff and permit applicants, including municipal, provincial, and federal partners, and/or private industry representatives.
- Perform necessary site inspections, referring to ABCA and provincial policies, official plans, zoning bylaws, aerial photographs, regulation and flood plain mapping and any other related documents.
- Undertake the review of technical documentation toward producing detailed correspondence on applications, reports, studies, and plans
- Assist in the delivery of the ABCA’s flood forecasting / warning and structures programs
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will:
- Have a degree from a university or college in civil engineering, or natural resource management field and,
- Have a demonstrated ability to effectively and collaboratively problem-solve;
- Be an effective communicator able to resolve conflict and facilitate discussion toward consensus in a multi-stakeholder environment (competing interests);
- Be a team player with extraordinary organization, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
- Have an ability to work outdoors and in adverse environmental conditions.
Assets:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in water resources engineering.
- An ability to understand site conditions associated with the review of applications and the connection to policy documents and other related instruments.
- An ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings and topographical information.
- Skill in writing technical correspondence and reports and /or policy documentation.
- Experience in municipal approval processes (land development), drainage, stormwater management and other technical disciplines (water resource engineering, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, ecology).
- A working knowledge of GIS.
- Experience in data acquisition operating a variety of equipment such as Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.), land survey (topographical), or other sensing technologies (drone operation);
- Knowledge of Conservation Authority programs and legislated regulatory responsibilities.
Remuneration: $30.85 to $38.57 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
Hours: 35 hours per week with some evenings and weekends.
