Flood message issued on August 23, 2026
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) issued this Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook and Water Safety flood message on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 1 p.m.
Up to 70 millimetres of rain received, risk of minor flooding.
Watershed residents are reminded to stay away from watercourses.
Significant rainfall has fallen across the Ausable Bayfield watershed area over the last 24 hours, with rainfall totals reaching 70 mm (millimetres) in some areas.
Rain is expected to continue through today (Sunday, August 23) into tomorrow.
Current forecasts vary widely from 10 to 50 mm of additional rainfall.
Due to the highly localized nature of thunderstorms, rainfall totals remain uncertain and may vary significantly across the watershed.
The event began with dry soils that absorbed some of the initial rainfall on Saturday. However, ground conditions are now becoming saturated, with limited capacity to absorb additional moisture.
Further rainfall may result in increased runoff and additional rises in watercourse levels.
Major flooding is not expected at this time, but intense rain can cause flows in rivers and streams to increase quickly and without warning. Minor flooding remains possible, although any flooding is expected to be limited to low-lying, undeveloped floodplain areas.
Residents are reminded to avoid rivers and other waterways during and following periods of heavy rainfall. Recent rainfall and rising water levels can make riverbanks slippery and unstable. Conditions can change rapidly, and fast-flowing water presents a significant hazard.
Municipal staff should continue to monitor local drainage problem areas where water is prone to ponding.
This message will remain in effect until 12:00 p.m. noon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, unless otherwise updated.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will provide an update if required.
