Job Posting – Water Quality Technologist

September 2025 to December 2026

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is accepting applications for a contract position for a Water Quality Technologist. The Water Quality Technologist assists the Healthy Watersheds department with projects related to water quality and conducting watershed studies.

Duties include:
  • Conducting regular and event-based (during/after rain) surface water sampling, including edge-of-field sample collection. This will often require working outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and heat.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain automated water samplers (ISCO) to ensure continuous and accurate data collection.
  • Accurately measure stream flows using various techniques and equipment.
  • Assist with biomonitoring activities, including fish, freshwater mussels, and benthic macroinvertebrate communities.
  • Perform general data entry, summarize field data, and work proficiently with large datasets using digital tools.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing findings and effectively communicate project updates and results to the team and stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in environmental studies, water resources, hydrology, biology, environmental engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with outdoor fieldwork, particularly in environmental monitoring, and a proven ability to work effectively in adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience monitoring, analyzing, and reporting physical, chemical, and biological water-related data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially MS Excel for data analysis and management.
  • Experience with database management (e.g., MS Access, SQL).
  • Strong working knowledge of GIS software, including ArcGIS/Pro/Online and ESRI mapping products.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and water samples and comfortable navigating uneven terrain and wet environments.
  • A team player with good organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada and possess a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence.

Remuneration: $30.85-38.57

Hours: 35 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends as required.
